Article: Right Place, Right Time

Right Place, Right Time

Right Place, Right Time

After half a century behind the camera, I’ve photographed just about everything that can sit still, stand still, or be bribed to sit still. CEOs, farmers, brides, mechanics, grandmothers, newborn babies, and at least one dog who clearly believed he was in charge of the entire production.

Now, I’m proud to call Aubrey, TX and the Metro DFW area home—a place where the scenery is honest, the people are genuine, and nobody feels the need to pretend they’re something they’re not. Frankly, it’s refreshing.

My career began long before digital cameras existed, back when photographers had to actually know what they were doing. I’ve spent decades photographing families, weddings, and commercial clients, learning how to capture the moments people treasure most.

Family photography, in particular, has always been close to my heart. Families grow, children grow up, and life moves faster every year—but a portrait freezes time, if only for a moment. Plus, it’s proof to future generations that yes, Grandpa really did have hair once.

Weddings have also been a major part of my journey. I’ve photographed elegant church ceremonies, backyard celebrations, and everything in between. Weddings are beautifully unpredictable. Something will always go wrong—flowers wilt, rings get misplaced, someone’s uncle wanders into the aisle at exactly the wrong moment—but those imperfections are often what make the day memorable. My job is to capture the joy, the nerves, the laughter, and the quiet moments that nobody else notices.

Commercial photography has taken me into businesses of every kind, helping owners present themselves with confidence and professionalism. Whether it’s a local shop owner, a craftsman, a medical professional, or a family-run business, strong imagery helps people connect. And in communities like Big Stone Gap, Norton, Wise, and all across Powell Valley, those connections matter.

Over the years, I’ve also mentored many photographers—helping them learn not just camera settings, but how to see. Photography is less about equipment and more about patience, observation, and knowing when not to say, “Smile.” Mentoring has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career, although it has forced me to admit that technology has advanced just slightly since 1975.

What draws me to Northern DFW isn’t just the beauty of the area—it’s the people. There’s a quiet strength here. Generations of families rooted in the same soil. Including, incidentally, my own. Businesses built with grit and persistence. Stories that deserve to be preserved.

My goal is simple: to serve this community by creating photographs that families will cherish, businesses will be proud of, and future generations will value.

I may be new to DFW—but I bring 50 years of experience, a deep respect for the craft, and just enough stubbornness to chase perfect light over one more hill.

If you see a white-haired fellow with a beard standing in a field waiting for the sun to behave, that’s probably me. And I’m exactly where I belong.
